Retiring in Spain on €1500 a month: which cities are realistic?
Published
€1,500 a month is a tight Spanish retirement envelope—more plausible for careful singles or extremely frugal couples than for spacious 95 m² coastal rentals. Retirely’s living costs and rent ranks show where the maths might work and where it clearly does not.
We examine Murcia, Asturias, Seville, Costa del Azahar, and Spanish Pyrenees.
This is not legal, tax, visa, or medical advice. Treat Retirely figures as planning baselines, then verify rents, clinic access, and neighbourhood feel in person.

How to read a tight €1,500 budget
Add couple living costs + rent. If you are a couple sharing one home, Retirely’s couple figure already assumes two people in the day-to-day basket—rent is still extra. A 95 m² band may be larger than you need; smaller flats can cost less, but we will not invent a lower euro rent than Retirely publishes. If even the minimum rent plus living costs exceeds €1,500, that city is not realistic at this envelope without non-Retirely assumptions (living with family, owning outright, etc.).
Tight-budget Spanish Retirely cities
| City | Couple living costs | Rent (95 m²) | Rent rank | Min stack (living + min rent) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Murcia | €564 | €359–€682 | 8 | €923 |
| Costa del Azahar | €610 | €392–€669 | 6 | €1,002 |
| Asturias | €615 | €377–€832 | 16 | €992 |
| Seville | €581 | €512–€919 | 22 | €1,093 |
| Spanish Pyrenees | €702 | €555–€686 | 10 | €1,257 |
Reading the min stacks: Murcia (€923), Costa del Azahar (€1,002), and Asturias (€992) can theoretically touch a €1,500 line only at the bottom of the rent band with almost no buffer. Seville’s min stack (€1,093) already presses the ceiling. Spanish Pyrenees (~€1,257) exceeds €1,500 even at minimum rent plus living costs.
Realistic verdict: €1,500 is edge-case territory for couples renting near Retirely’s 95 m² sizes. It becomes more plausible if you already own, share housing, or rent much smaller than 95 m²—situations outside these published bands. Do not force trophy coastal rents into this envelope.
Healthcare trade-offs at lower budgets
| City | Healthcare | Safety |
|---|---|---|
| Asturias | 87 High (rank 6) | 80 Low (rank 3) |
| Spanish Pyrenees | 81 High (rank 22) | 88 Low (rank 1) |
| Murcia | 82 High (rank 19) | 65 Medium (rank 24) |
| Costa del Azahar | 77 High (rank 38) | 77 Low (rank 4) |
| Seville | 77 High (rank 38) | 68 Medium (rank 16) |
Asturias and the Pyrenees offer outstanding safety/healthcare—but the Pyrenees fail the strict €1,500 rent+living stack. Murcia and Costa del Azahar are the cost-first candidates with still-High healthcare labels.
Practical takeaways
- €1,500/month for a renting couple near 95 m² is rarely comfortable—math only brushes the line in Murcia, Costa del Azahar, or Asturias at minimum rent.
- Spanish Pyrenees living+min rent already exceeds €1,500.
- Prefer these cities for tight budgets only with smaller housing or ownership—or raise the envelope.
- Healthcare remains High in this set; safety is excellent in Asturias/Pyrenees/Azahar.
- Verify current asking rents; mins can be scarce.
- Soft-check metrics on Retirely before planning a move on this number.
Scouting week checklist (for you or adult children helping)
Metrics shrink the map; a scouting week decides the flat. Walk residential streets in the morning, price a normal food shop at midday, ask a clinic reception how newcomer appointments work in the afternoon (informally), test apartment internet at your usual call time, and return after dark to notice lighting and noise. Write Retirely figures beside what you observed. If asking rents sit far above the published 95 m² band, adjust budget or neighbourhood before you fall in love with a view.
Questions to bring to a viewing
Ask every landlord or agent: What is included in the quoted rent or community fee? How old is the heating or cooling system? Has the fibre line been tested in this exact flat? How far is the nearest after-hours clinic? Write the answers next to Retirely’s published rent band and living-cost figure so gaps show immediately.
Budget stacking reminder
Retirely’s couple living costs exclude rent. Plan living costs + rent (or owner costs) + travel-home buffer + health insurance top-ups. Re-check figures on city pages; this draft snapshot is 27 Jun 2025.

Soft next step on Retirely
On each city page, add couple living costs to the rent minimum and maximum; if both stacks sit near or above €1,500, raise your budget or change the housing assumption.
