How to shortlist Southern Europe retirement cities using only Retirely metrics
Published
You do not need twenty browser tabs of conflicting blogs. You need a repeatable shortlist method and one consistent metric source. This closing guide walks a step-by-step filter — budget band → healthcare → safety → weather → English/internet — using live Retirely figures across a representative mix of cities. It also sketches example shortlists for couple living-cost planning bands and a buy-vs-rent fork.
This is not legal, tax, visa, or medical advice. Figures are Retirely city metrics as of a draft pull on 27 May 2025 — re-check on the city pages before you decide.
Figures below come only from Retirely city metrics. Living costs for a couple exclude rent; rent and purchase bands use a 95 m² equivalent. If a score is missing on a city page, we say so rather than inventing euros or ranks.
Step-by-step shortlist method
- Budget band: Read couple living costs, then add a rent pick inside the 95 m² band. Decide your all-in ceiling before you fall in love with a harbour.
- Healthcare: Keep cities with High scores when published; if Finder healthcare is blank, flag “verify in person” instead of inventing a score.
- Safety: Use score, crime label, and rank as a veto or caution — not as the only lifestyle criterion.
- Weather: Prefer your minimum weather score and winter mildness; winter-scout anything marginal.
- English / internet: Ensure daily life and family Zoom will work while you learn the local language.
- Final human pass: Open Retirely city pages + community insights for the last two or three places only.

Example shortlists by couple living-cost band
These examples use Retirely couple living costs (rent still separate). They are planning illustrations, not personalised advice.
Around €500–€600 living-cost lines: Algarve €522, Braga €517, Murcia €564, Alicante €589. Add rent carefully — Alicante rent €762–€1,087 differs from Murcia €359–€682.
Around €600–€750: Gozo €616, Crete €646, Larnaca €675, Kalamata €699, Puglia €721, Sicily €723. Crete’s healthcare 89 is a standout; Larnaca/Gozo need care verification where Finder healthcare is blank.
Higher living-cost lines (~€800+): Abruzzo €816, Montpellier €832. These can still fit a €2,000–€2,500 all-in story if rent stays disciplined — Montpellier’s rent band is wide (€561–€2,546).
Buy vs rent using housing prices and rent ranks
Rent-first cities with friendly ranks in this mix include Murcia (rent rank 8), Braga (14), Kalamata (11), and Crete (25). Buy-curious households should open purchase bands — for example Murcia €71,136–€135,100, Braga €84,835–€203,965, Abruzzo €88,255–€204,250 — and still trial-rent before buying.
Practical takeaways
- One method beats twenty opinions: budget → care → safety → weather → English/internet.
- Living-cost bands alone are not all-in budgets — add rent.
- Keep multi-country options so Iberia is not your only lens.
- Missing healthcare Finder fields are flags to verify, not invented scores.
- Soft CTA: compare finalists on Retirely city pages and skim community insights last.
- Re-check metrics on publish (27 May 2025 draft pull).
What these numbers do not replace
Retirely metrics are a shortlist tool, not a move checklist. They will not tell you whether a third-floor walk-up suits your knees, whether a specific GP speaks your language on Tuesdays, or whether a landlord accepts longer winter leases. Use the scores to drop cities that clearly miss your budget or care bar, then spend money on a scouting trip in the season you will actually live — ideally including at least one grey, windy week.
When you stack a monthly budget, keep three layers visible: (1) Retirely couple living costs, (2) rent or mortgage inside or below the published 95 m² band, and (3) a buffer for flights home, private top-up insurance, gifts, and the first year of “we did not know that bill existed.” Couples who treat layer three as optional tend to feel “surprised by Europe,” not “settled in Europe.”
If adult children are helping parents decide, print the city-page tables and mark only the fields that matter for your family — for example healthcare rank, rent ceiling, and English rating — so the conversation stays concrete instead of drifting into brochure photos.
A simple way to use this article
- Circle your hard ceiling for rent and for all-in monthly spend.
- Keep cities where Retirely’s living costs + a realistic rent pick sit inside that ceiling.
- Among survivors, rank healthcare (when scored), then safety, then weather / English / internet in the order your household actually cares about.
- Open the Retirely city pages for your final two or three places and skim community insights for lived-in notes that metrics cannot capture.
- Only then book viewings — metrics first, emotions second, lease last.
