Best weather score cities for year-round retirement comfort
Published
Year-round comfort is more than “lots of sun.” Retirees who move for August photos sometimes regret January wind. Retirely’s weather block combines a weather score with winter mildness, sunshine hours, comfort days, and rain. Here is a multi-country mix of mainland coasts and islands that lead — or surprise — on those metrics, with living costs, healthcare, and safety beside them.
This is not legal, tax, visa, or medical advice. Figures are Retirely city metrics as of a draft pull on 8 Mar 2025 — re-check on the city pages before you decide.
Figures below come only from Retirely city metrics. Living costs for a couple exclude rent; rent and purchase bands use a 95 m² equivalent. If a score is missing on a city page, we say so rather than inventing euros or ranks.
How to read weather metrics
A high weather_score is the headline. Winter mildness matters if you stay from November to March. Comfort days and low rain help daily walking and outdoor habits. Sunshine hours alone can hide hot summers or damp winters — read the whole block on the city page. Then ask whether healthcare and safety still clear your bar in the sunny place you like.

Standouts
Highest weather scores in this set: Algarve 81, Malta pages (Valletta/Silema/Gozo) 75–75, Limassol 72, Costa del Sol 70, Crete 68, Nice 65.
Winter mildness caution: Algarve winter mildness is only 6 despite the top weather score — Atlantic nights can still feel cool. Malta winter mildness 2 is similarly low on Retirely’s scale even with high weather scores. Provence winter mildness 75 and Sicily 109 read differently; Sicily’s weather score 57 is mid-pack here. Visit in the coldest month you fear, not the warmest month you fantasise.
Living costs among weather leaders
Algarve couple living costs €522 look friendly beside Nice €915 or Costa del Sol €821. Madeira €579 and Crete €646 sit in a comfortable middle. Cyprus/Malta couple figures cluster roughly €675–€814. Rent remains separate and can erase a “cheap living costs” story on premium coasts — always open the rent band before you celebrate a weather win.
Healthcare and safety among weather leaders
Scored examples: Crete healthcare 89, Nice 84, Costa del Sol 77, Sicily 74, Algarve 62 (Medium), Madeira 78. Safety: Nice 47, Costa del Sol 64, Crete 53, Malta pages 76 (Low crime). Cyprus healthcare/safety Finder standards are partly unpublished — see those city pages.
Practical takeaways
- Weather-score kings here: Algarve, Malta, Cyprus, Costa del Sol, Crete, Nice.
- Still winter-scout places with low winter-mildness figures.
- Pair climate with healthcare if you are done gambling on clinics.
- Algarve wins many value+weather spreads on living costs — check its rent band next.
- Islands need logistics plans for specialist care.
- Compare two climate finalists on Retirely before shipping household goods.
What these numbers do not replace
Retirely metrics are a shortlist tool, not a move checklist. They will not tell you whether a third-floor walk-up suits your knees, whether a specific GP speaks your language on Tuesdays, or whether a landlord accepts longer winter leases. Use the scores to drop cities that clearly miss your budget or care bar, then spend money on a scouting trip in the season you will actually live — ideally including at least one grey, windy week.
When you stack a monthly budget, keep three layers visible: (1) Retirely couple living costs, (2) rent or mortgage inside or below the published 95 m² band, and (3) a buffer for flights home, private top-up insurance, gifts, and the first year of “we did not know that bill existed.” Couples who treat layer three as optional tend to feel “surprised by Europe,” not “settled in Europe.”
If adult children are helping parents decide, print the city-page tables and mark only the fields that matter for your family — for example healthcare rank, rent ceiling, and English rating — so the conversation stays concrete instead of drifting into brochure photos.
A simple way to use this article
- Circle your hard ceiling for rent and for all-in monthly spend.
- Keep cities where Retirely’s living costs + a realistic rent pick sit inside that ceiling.
- Among survivors, rank healthcare (when scored), then safety, then weather / English / internet in the order your household actually cares about.
- Open the Retirely city pages for your final two or three places and skim community insights for lived-in notes that metrics cannot capture.
- Only then book viewings — metrics first, emotions second, lease last.
